Layla says that the landscape itself is beautiful in its own right, with the light and the mountains and the sky, but she feels so ruptured from her regular life that she cannot appreciate the beauty on its own terms. She can only experience it as an additional condition of her internment, and she even says that she feels like the desert is complicit.
