Why do you think the author chose to write the end of rumor spaced so far apart? What effect does it create? How does it make you feel as the reader?

Different people hear the rumor from different people, but the information takes time to be passed down from one to another. I think this time is why there are spaces between each person hearing the rumor. The rumor of course changes a little as it gets passed down.
