Archimedes, best known as Archimedes of Syracuse, was the son of an astronomer and reputed relative of Hiero II, King of Syracuse. He lived on the Syracuse-ruled state of Sicily for most of his life, except for the period in which he studied in Alexandria, Egypt. Archimedes, a supposed follower of Euclid, was known as a Greek mathematician, inventor, engineer, physicist, and astronomer, and although little is known about his life, he is considered to be one of the great minds of the ancient scientific community.
