What happens to Saul's grandmother in Chapter Ten?

In Chapter Ten, Saul and his grandmother gather their supplies and begin to travel by canoe and by foot. The weather becomes quite cold, and heavy snowfall begins. Their journey becomes arduous due to the cold and the snow. They eventually make it to a railroad outpost, where Saul’s grandmother dies of cold.
