Why are many of the men upset and horrified by what Yekel does with the Torah scroll?

The men have such a strong negative response to the throwing away of the Torah scroll, because it is a vital part of Jewish culture, and they see it as the desecration of the Torah. They also see it as proof that Sholem is a Jew-hating Jew.
