How does Zane kill Death in the novel, On a Pale Horse?

When Zane decides to shoot himself, and he is just about to pull the trigger, Death walks into his apartment. Startled, Zane no longer wants to die. When he jerks his hand away, however, he accidentally pulls the trigger and shoots Death in the face.
