What is the Ember-Stone in In the Hand of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce?

The Great Mother Goddess gives Alanna the ember-stone in order to determine when magic is used and who is responsible. By using the stone, Alanna is able to discover that Duke Roger is using magic in the kingdom for evil purposes.
