Much of the language of the novel is used to set up the magical world that is the setting of the story. The language is easy for younger readers to understand. The author uses many terms of art that are familiar from European history, knights and the Middle Ages. Much of the flavor of the battle, the Court and the army comes from the descriptive words used to identify implements of war. Other language is that of the magical world created for the book. These words pertain to spells and rituals which are part of the land of Tortall and its neighbors.
