What is the tone in the novel, In a Free State?

The narrator's tone is neutral for the most part, and he does not seem to be involved emotionally with the events unfolding around him, until his hand is forced in Luxor with the Italian's cruel game. Even then, he feels the unwanted attention that he receives as a result of his intervention, and he is uncomfortable with it, preferring to blend in with the crowd.
