Who is Kate Farren from In This House of Brede and what is their importance?

Kate's mother was the Phillipa's son's nanny. She entered the abbey because of her respect for Phillipa. Phillipa, however, has a difficult time accepting Kate because she brings back memories of her son's death. After suffering a severe bout of chicken pox and being cared for by Kate, Phillipa comes to embrace her.
