Amy Bloom describes herself and her lifestyle in a mix of active and passive styles varying depending on the progression of the memoir and the status of progress with Dignitas. As the memoir blends the present and the past, the changes in tone are not due to the position in the work. When it is still unclear whether Brian will be accepted by Dignitas, Amy’s tone is more frantic, stressed, and worried. As her story continues, her tone becomes hopeless and angry... genuine responses to her story.
