How does Mac explain the process of a strike to Jim?

The strikers leave their jobs and begin to picket and set up camp. The county then passes an ordinance making congregation illegal. They congregate the men so that a fight will break out, which usually bonds the men together in their cause. The owners will then start a vigilante committee to shoot at the pickers. If anyone is killed, there is a public funeral that escalates the pickers' beliefs.
