New Orleans is the setting in both Nick’s own reality and the other dimension, and there is some overlapping in his personal landmarks, though some of the shops he is used to are different, as well as his own home. New Orleans has a long Cajun history, which influences Nick, who is proud of his heritage. This mainly manifests itself as “Cajun stubbornness,” and a determination to persevere even in the face of failure. As a city with a mixed cultural background and a generally regarded laissez-faire attitude, is a perfect arena for the mingling of human and demon elements. It also has a strong Catholic history, which plays a role in Nick’s narrative, forming the moral backbone which grounds him, via his mother.
