Nowlin's exposition begins with a scene foreshadowing the end: Finny and Sylvie’s car crash. This creates an overarching mood of suspense and unease throughout the novel as Autumn implies she is the reason for the couple’s fight during their crash. This is especially intriguing since the reader soon learns that Autumn and Finny stopped being friends after elementary school.
