Tish did not really want to go to Fonny's church, but she knows it is important to Mrs. Hunt. Their church had once been a post office and it still looked like a post office. Fonny's mother is a popular person at the church and she gets a lot of satisfaction at looking good and having people see her looking good. Tish gets the impression that a big part of the church-going experience for Fonny's mother is to be seen by as many people as possible.
