Stalin was the leader of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union after the death of Lenin, the leader of the Russian Revolution, in 1924. He continued as leader until his death in 1953. Stalin oversaw numerous "purges" of the Communist Party, i.e., murders of political opponents, and instituted a number of Five Year Plans to industrialize the Soviet Union which led to widespread famine.
