Erikson conceives himself as a serious, scientific, clinical psychologist. A large portion of the book is dry and filled with technical jargon. Erikson, however, prevents phraseology from making the book incomprehensible. In fact, his tone is for the most part quite clear and engaging, especially when he analyzes case studies and uses vivid stories to illustrate his ideas.
