Metaphor:

In the poem, My Half-Sleep, the writer uses the desert sand as a metaphor for the wall of silence that surrounds a victim of abuse. In this poem, the writer describes a rape by her grandfather that the child is afraid to tell anyone about because she does not want to hurt the grandmother who loves her or the sister who looks up to her. At the same time, the young victim is torn because she wants to protect her sister, but she is afraid of the consequences of telling her secret.
