The narrator of the story, The Pitch, is a woman who learns strange and discomfiting information about her husband's childhood after seeing a photograph and receiving a cryptic voicemail from her father-in-law. She is a children's book illustrator working on a project for an eccentric writer over the course of the story—a book about animals conducting a ballet while being held hostage by a dictator. As her husband's behavior becomes increasingly unsettling, the narrator decides to paint her animal characters on the walls of her house, believing they will protect her in some way. At the end of the story, she thinks her husband has taken her into the Florida woods of his youth to kill her, but instead he tells her about his brother, who disappeared when they were children after following their mother's voice up a tree. Her husband then climbs the tree and disappears as well. The narrator writes a children's book loosely based on these events and wins a Caldecott Medal.
