Although the prologue takes places months before the main action in the book, it ends up affecting each of the main characters. The author foreshadows each of the main themes of the book. In his description of the college campus he shows that is it a world unto itself in that it is highly orchestrated to be different than the rest of the world. However the University's highly planned environment has several broad hints that it is merely a fazade, and not the academic epicenter it once was. Moreover, the Governor's shocking act immediately throws into question his own identity as a leader.
