What is the importance of Mama's car in the novel, How to Steal a Dog?

The car belonging to Mama becomes the family's home when they get evicted from their apartment after Georgina's dad abandons them. The car is old and smelly. It rattles and jerks for most of the story and even stops running until Mookie secretly repairs it.
