In "Slingshot," an unnamed narrator reflects on her brief romantic and sexual relationship with a much younger neighbor named Richard. When they became involved, the narrator was 70 years old and Richard was 32. The narrator was widowed 30 years before the events of the story take place, and she had not been in a relationship since that time. She is drawn to Richard because of his frank talk about women and sex, and after a series of conversations, they begin sleeping together. The narrator experiences something of a sexual awakening through this relationship, and she is disappointed when it ends and Richard begins seeing another woman, Eve. Though she had strong feelings for Richard, she was not willing to wait out his other relationship, as Eve's boyfriend Daniel was with Eve. "I did not wait," she says at the end of the story, "I am not the kind of person who watches something happen in the distance" (40).
