In "Monticello Plantation," Smith examines and interrogates founding father Thomas Jefferson's relationship to slavery. Throughout his time visiting Monticello, Smith begins to better understand Jefferson's identity and legacy. The historical site offers Smith a gateway into understanding Jefferson. Contrary to what most individuals believe about the former president, Jefferson was a proponent of the slave trade, despite his admissions that the institution was detrimental for all.
