In the chapter "Angola Prison," Smith travels to Angola Prison with a longtime acquaintance named Norris Henderson. Smith originally learned about Norris "because of his political work around voting rights" (85). Norris is also a compelling figure in that he was "incarcerated in Angola for a crime he maintains he did not commit" (85). Over the course of the years since his release from Angola, Norris has continued to visit the prison and to act as a guide there. In "Angola Prison," Smith relies upon Norris's intimate relationship with and knowledge of the place to better understand its past and present practices. Norris's descriptions of his time picking cotton while interned at Angola particularly move Smith.
