Sandra Uwiringiyimana was born in Africa and grew up under the constant threat of war and violence. Her family often had to leave their home behind to stay with friends, family, or in refugee camps. One of those camps was the site of a massacre that left 166 people dead, including Sandra's younger sister, Deborah. With these horrors as the background for the remainder of Sandra's story, readers may expect the overall tone to be hopeless and fearful, but Sandra's narrative is clearly headed for a brighter outcome, lending an undertone of hope despite all the horrors.
