When we first meet Toundi, he is in awe of his surroundings, deferential to his superiors, and hardworking. Over the course of the text, however, he becomes disenchanted by the immorality of his so-called superiors and shows irreverence. When questioned by the Commandant as to the purity of the water Toundi serves him, Toundi brings him a fresh glass.... a glass he has spit into.
