In the novel's opening chapter, Roy notes that before moving to Coconut Cove, he lived in small Montana city that was surrounded by mountains. When Roy thinks about Montana, he is overwhelmed by a sense of happiness.... as Montana comes to be seen as a metaphor representing safety.
