Who is Father Laurence from Honor's Splendour and what is their importance?

Louddon hires Father Laurence to kill Madelyne. Laurence then poses as a priest, performs the marriage ceremony for Duncan and Madelyne (illegally), and then goes onto to attempt to kill Madelyne as ordered. Unfortunately for Father Laurence, Duncan gets the better of him, and he is fatally stabbed.
