Who is Marta Carver from the novel, Home Before Dark?

Marta Carver, who is later identified as the “ghost” Maggie called Miss Pennyface, is the wife of Curtis and the mother of Katie. After the deaths of her husband and daughter, Marta leaves the house and will not return even to get her things. She claims she will never return to the house, but it is learned that she had been sneaking into the house through a back entrance to watch Maggie as she slept.
