In Chapter One, the day before he enlists in the militia, Orwell sees an Italian militiaman reading a map with an officer. Orwell and the Italian man speak briefly, shake hands, and part ways. The man becomes, for Orwell, symbolic of the entire revolutionary mood of Barcelona at that point in time.
