How does Kathleen's trip to Las Vegas with her mother change their relationship for the better in the novel, Holding Pattern?

The Las Vegas trip is symbolic of renewal. By traveling to this new location with her mother, Kathleen edges closer to reconciliation with Marissa, with her past, and with herself. The trip indeed allows Kathleen and Marissa to not only communicate more openly, but to see each other differently.
