Though we do not meet Ingrid's parents until the end of the story, their appearance is vital. Over the course of the novel, Caitlin avoids discussing Ingrid's parents, and it is implied that they were close. When Ingrid's parents are introduced in the novel's conclusion, it becomes clear that Caitlin has stayed away knowing her presence will remind them of their lost daughter. The emotional scene between Ingrid's father and Caitlin shows just how much pain her parents are dealing with, and how much Ingrid's suicide has affected them. Their behaviors in the novel show that while they are still deeply hurting over the death of their daughter, they too are struggling to move forward.
