Lyle Hooper runs the notorious Black Cat Cafe, which is a legitimate bar and lounge. Everyone in town knows, however, that Hooper also runs prostitutes out of the parking lot who service clients in their cars. Hooper is afforded a hypocritical respect because he runs his protitution business quietly, but he also feels anger at society for forcing him to adapt to their need for an excuse for his activities, not his own need. He denies being a pimp until he is on his deathbed, at which point he breaks down and admits he was a pimp all along.
