Like Frank Herbert's previous four Dune novels, Heretics of Dune consists of unnumbered and untitled scenes, each headed by an epigraph drawn from ostensibly historical resources that help set the mood for what is presented. The sources are far more diverse than in previous novels. The Bene Gesserit Sisterhood is central to the story, being the last institution of the Old Empire to maintain integrity. Under the leadership of Reverend Mother Superior Alma Mavis Taraza, the Sisterhood faces a growing threat from an evil and violent spin-off calling itself "Honored Matres."
