Here I Stand: a Life of Martin Luther
Describe the daily prayer life in the monastery.
.
.
At one or two in the morning, Luther is awakened by a bell, makes the sign of the cross, and pulls on a white robe and scapular. At the second bell, each monk comes reverently to the church, sprinkles himself with holy water, and kneels before the altar to pray. Each of the seven periods of the day end with chanting praise to Mary, the mother of God.
