Clothing is a symbol of respect. In Derek’s world. He believes that being allowed to wear clothing is a symbol of respect. After he realizes Chelsea has been looking for a way to escape, he takes her clothes from her because he believes she has lost the right to wear them. He returns them only after she is able to properly recite his three rules to him.
