The hole represents a mistake. It is only after Chelsea has escaped that her captor realizes it was a mistake to leave the hole open. He claims that he had not blocked the hole because he wanted to at least let Chelsea have a way to see if it was day or night. When he considers how he will get her back, he decides to block the hole and further her torture by disorienting her to time.
