How did Virgil explain his sorrowful face to Lola? Is he telling the truth?

When Lola asks him why he is sorrowful, Virgil tells Lola (his grandmother) that he is thinking of a girl in one of the stories she has told him. Malaya of the Crocodiles. Malaya reminds him of Valencia, but he never tells Lola because he sees Valencia in the freezer aisle.... so, he is telling the truth.... he simply never tells the whole truth.
