In Act II, Part I, there are questions about exactly what kind of "friendship" Brack is offering Hedda. These questions foreshadow the outright offer of sexual comfort that he makes later in the play, when the trap around Hedda is at its most dangerous. Possibly, he's wanted a sexual relationship with Hedda all along, but at this point, he isn't ready to make the suggestion he does later in the play.
