When the narrator first meets Chid in Section 7, he is dressed in an orange robe like an Indian ascetic. However, he acts indignant at the way the watchman at the rest house treats both himself and the other English travelers. Although he claims that he doesn't mind having been robbed of his possession, he tells the narrator that when begging doesn't meet his needs he wires home for money. He also stays in hotel rooms rather than under trees as he was advised. These actions indicate that he is not genuine, and is more interested in being seen as a holy man than in actually attaining the enlightenment he says he seeks.
