When the narrator discovers that she is pregnant she feels a combination of disbelief, relief and happiness. She cannot quite believe that she is actually pregnant. She is relieved that Chid cannot be the father. And, although she is not quite willing to admit it yet, her act of skipping through the puddles on the way home indicates that some part of her is happy about the pregnancy.
