In Section 10, the narrator has taken to sleeping in the courtyard with Inder Lal's family to combat the heat. Her sleep is interrupted when an inhuman sounding shriek and wailing awakens her. She realizes it is Ritu. Inder Lal's mother covers her mouth, then the narrator helps her bring the upset woman inside.
