Frank’s trunk is a symbol of warning and consequences. It is a symbol that appears in the story “Hearts in Atlantis.” When Pete sees Frank leaving the dorm, carrying his trunk, he believes that it should have been a warning to him. Frank told Pete he had gotten so far behind playing cards that he did not think he could get caught up. Pete asks Frank what he will do about the draft, a question that Frank does not answer. Even though Pete has to acknowledge that if he does not concentrate on his studies he will be in danger of failing school and facing the consequences of the draft, it is still not enough to make him stop playing cards.
