What is the author's style in Harvesting the Heart by Jodi Picoult?

The language of this novel is simple and direct with only the occasional set of words that a common reader might not understand. Nicholas, one of the main characters, is a doctor and there are times when he speaks of his career using vocabulary an average person might not be familiar with. However, these words are used infrequently and are usually explained in the narration.
