Denmark Vessey has said “you deserve to be”. Explain what Denmark meant when he said this quote.

In context, Vesey is referring to the "equality" among all men. The slave's response, "But we are slaves", provokes this response from Vesey, meaning that if the slave believed himself inferior..... nothing more than a slave, then that is what he deserved to be.
