Dorvay, the syncopated sleep cycle Carney adopts in Part II, symbolizes compartmentalization. When Carney returns to criminal activity, he readopts dorvay, believing that the sleep pattern might keep the wicked and upright sides of himself separate. However, by the end of Part II, Carney realizes that this separation is unnecessary and impossible, and abandons dorvay.
