Harlem Shadows is entirely populated by the “feet” of people are presumably Black women engaging in sex work, looking for clients throughout the night. The women are at the center of the poem. In fact, besides the speaker, no other class of people are represented in the poem. Men are only indirectly referred to as “desire’s call” (4). McKay’s representation of these women is complicated, for they are both objectified and valorized. The reader never sees their face or becomes acquainted with their individual personalities. In this way, it is difficult to refer to them as characters at all. They operate more as living imagery than actual people within the urban landscape McKay sketches.
