Hard Times is written from the third person omniscient point of view, which allows the reader to view the themes and events through a variety of perspectives. This is Dickens’ most politically motivated novel, and many critics argue that in his relentless pursuit of social change (particularly in regards to the treatment of the working poor), he sacrificed some of his literary merit. As a result of his political drive, Dickens creates a variety of stereotyped, archetypal characters.
