Chapter Five introduces Room 501, the abandoned art room. The room had only six chairs with swing-up desks, a wall clock, and an old drawing of the sun tacked to the closet door. Ms. Laverne told them that every Friday afternoon for the last hour of the day they would be coming to this room to talk about anything. There would be no teacher in the room. The kids were unsure of this new idea, but Ms. Laverne told them they just were just afraid of the Unfamiliar. There is a temporary shift in tense as Haley reflects on that moment. She realizes that all through life everyone is always walking into another new room, another experience whether they know it or not.
