Holly's sneakers symbolize her family's financial status. Because her family is well-off, she gets almost everything she wants. The sneakers she wore to school following Christmas vacation were a style that was very expensive and also a coveted brand by the kids at school. Holly is very uncomfortable with the fact that her parents are rich and says it is not her fault that she was born into a rich family.
